This car is the standard for the start of the "special" paint scheme. Those cars were NOT special schemes, they were cars without a sponsor who had one for a race. Period. This car ushered in the era of alt schemes and basically gave life to diecasts.

That's pretty much what I said, I just meant that the cars mentioned in the "offical" definition were not technically special paint shcemes as we refer to them today because they had no primary sponsor for the season, so NASCAR put the miitary on their cars for the race

A special scheme doesn't have anything to do with a sponsor. Was Ken Schrader's 2001 USA flag car no special scheme because there were no sponsors on it? In my very own definition there is a standard scheme that a driver uses most of the races. If the car looks different on first sight for a race, it's a special scheme. Just as simple as that.

I wouldnt necesarally call those special paint schemes because they didnt have primary sponsors. Most people associate special paint schemes with a new look for the car, or a secondary sponosor being on the hood of the car. So yeah, Earnhardt did start the special paint schemes we talk about today

Reynolds promotion, five unsponsored drivers had paint schemes on their cars that paid tribute to the branches of the United States Armed Forces serving in Operation Desert Storm: The cars that ran special paint schemes were the #7 of Alan Kulwicki in the Army car, #18 Greg Sacks in the Navy Car, #24 Mickey Gibbs in the Air Force, #71 Dave Marcis in the coast guard car and #88 Buddy Baker in the Marines car. I hate when people try and give earnhardt too much credit. You dont have to look it up, cause I already did ;-) By the way, sweet job on a classic car!

Ah, the one that started it all. Nice job, as usual. Anyone else think that since E did this, the special paint scheme has gotten out of hand?
